So when is something 'too much'? That is to say is there a boundary line that has 'acceptable' on one side and 'unacceptable' on the other. I've been pondering this thanks to AMV Hell 4 which I finally got around to watching (usually I start and then realise it's an hour and 24 minutes long which is a long time to watch an anime music video). If you've watched the AMV Hell series you kind of know what you're getting a lot of tits, ass, violence and poo humour and I'm okay with that - sure sometimes I don't find it funny but I don't really find it that offensive either. This time though there where a couple of scenes that stood out in their mind for being a little out there for me. One of them which had Adolf Hitler singing 'I'm dreaming of a white christmas' I found quite funny even though the logical side of me says 'that's probably pretty offensive'. The other didn't make me laugh but it did make me cringe and nothing even happened in it - it was just a couple of clips of a jumbo jet descending with a scene of the world trade centre and some music in the background. Nothing happened though and yet I still cringed.
So why is it then that a crazy bastard who dragged the world into war and ultimately killed millions is okay, on one side of the line and can make me laugh when a scene which harks to the world trade centre attacks makes me say 'that is too much' is on the other?
Certainly something to think about... |

A leetl stressed at the moment, Dad was in hospital today having surgery (minor surgery prior to the next round on his knee) and I kind of just want to know what happened!
Rand if you read this apologies if I was a bit abrupt, I just have a lot on my mind tonight and I have meet up with Lauren tomorrow night as she needs me to bring some things to her. By Friday I'm certain it will all have settled down. |

Funnily enough after the news about my blood from the other day the latest news is from the Blood Donor Service. A while ago I gave blood for the first time and didn't think much about it after that, well today I found the letter which had come through after it which was quite interesting as it turns out that I have O rh- blood or to put it another way am a universal donor. This was interesting something of a shock as I had expected to be common like dad, but definitely good news - will definitely have to carry on donating (especially with the looking after myself thing under full swing) :)Current Mood: happy

Yay I completed Mirrors Edge!
It got me thinking though - partly about games that alternately make me want to scream for being so bloody hard or get beneath my skin and say 'just one more go I won't kill you this time' but mostly it got me thinking about the concept of the dystopia. Mirrors Edge is unusual in gaming in that it depicts a utopian dystopia, a concept that I find fascinating - it could so easily happen - Imagine a world where there is no real crime, where you can walk the streets freely, where terrorism is a thing of the past and all you have to do is give up your freedom.
Curious non? |

I'm always impressed by the ability of music to capture an emotion or alter an emotional state, certainly there a songs that can lift my high and others that can crush me and I suspect it's the same for everyone. And who's doing the emotional mood altering at the moment? Why the Scissor Sisters of course, the truly do have some excellent tracks...

A question - do you like zombie films? Another - do you dislike big brother? If you answered yes to both you owe it to yourself to watch Dead Set (you'll need to download or otherwise catch-up with episode one) but I just saw the first ep and thought it was great. Really looking forwards to episode 2 tonight!

| » The iPod |
Question The iPod is a fundamentally poor design: discuss.
I have two iPods, a 4th Generation one that I got from Lauren and a third generation Nano that my parents got me. Of the two the Nano generally works but goes screwy when it's got a very low battery and the 4th Gen one is a bit poorly in general (it doesn't often boot properly). That's the thing though - there's no real reason why they should both struggle in the way they do, I wouldn't expect any of my other electrical devices to struggle in the way they do.
I have to ponder tonight though why the heck my poorly 4th gen is working better than the Nano...
Rant over.
Edit: Good lord! Apparently Steve Jobs aka Apple God must have been listening I now have two iPods happily charging away. I can't believe that the 4th gen one has decided to play ball!

| » A good day. |
At the risk of tempting fate today has gone quite well - got up late-ish and then helped Lauren sort out the shed, made a couple of trips to the tip and had lunch at the local garden centre and very nice it was too. After that came home had an ice-cream and then mowed the lawn with Laurens help. Finished the afternoon up by sorting my car out, checking levels out and topping up where needed. Finally I went to tescos got some food and some petrol before checking my tyre pressures and then hooning it down the A14 because after all the tinkering the car feels pretty nice to drive.
In a few minutes I shall be sitting down to a tea of fish-fingers sandwiches. I really am happy :)

| » I hate letting. |
Bah humbug - we had a phone call from the letting agency today wanting to do an inspection next week and the two dates they've suggested they can do are both times lauren and I aren't going to be here.
Most annoyed as it means I'll have to reschedule my holiday plans.
Edit: Incidentally the other crap thing is I've put on weight and have managed to buy the wrong size jeans tonight... Damnit!

Bob the Triops died today. I may have only had him as a pet for a short time (about 50 days) and he did die of old age but he was awesome. Bob has been buried in the garden in a little cardboard coffin.
RIP Bob the Triops.

| » Musicals and the best of dreams... |
I finally got around to watching Dr Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog and holy hell it's *awesome*. If you haven't seen it being a late adopter like me, it was a web show created by Joss Whedon during the writers strike starring Dr Horrible and his attempt to get the girl and incidentally get into the Evil League of Evil and oh yeah rule the world. Unfortunately he's constantly frustrated by Nathan Fillion playing an asshole super-hero Hammer Man.
Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog of awesomeness! The final part is up on Friday - go watch!
The other part of this entry is the best of dreams, I saved this for the second part of the entry so that you could read about Dr Horrible and then bugger off if you wanted to, I'm good like that. Now the dream may seem like any ordinary dream but how often is it that you wake up grinning?
I'd dreamt I was in an old hospital with my work colleague X (X looks like a doctor type and is a nice guy), we where frantically going around this hospital trying to find where we where meant to be going as we had an emergency surgical consult and hell we couldn't find the patient. It being a dream of course the hospital was truly bizarre borrowing elements from every victorian building I ever visited, the numerous abandoned buildings I've stood in in the course of work, a shopping mall and my mums old nursery. Anyway we eventually track down the patient (who really is in a victorian style ward) and she chats with us. X flashes her a smile as he talks about the operation he'll have to do (X has genuinely unnerving smiles at times...)and suggests that I find a pair of scrubs as I'll be observing (I've been following him around as I'm new). He thinks that there's a pair in the Nursery (wtf?) so I go and look with a nurse who suggests that the 'red silk shorts and dressing gown top' will be fine. I don them reluctantly and head back to the patient at which point I mention that I look like Mike Tyson in this outfit and we laugh and then I wake up.
I actually woke up half grinning half giggling and for that reason alone it was the best dream ever. Looking at the structure of the dream I also think it's fairly positive as it's obvious that subconciously I see my self as a new professional (albeit a nervous embarrassed one) and that train of thought can only ultimately end in a good place.
Right I suppose I should get up, I have painting to do and a psychic hood to make...

| » Physio |
Got back from my first physio appointment a short while ago which was interesting - turns out the main cause of my limp is due to my ankle not having been set correctly during surgery with the result that my foot is about 10 degrees out from where it should rest. It looks like I might well have this limp (to an extent) ad infinitum because of it but I'm feeling okay because I was convinced they hadn't set it correctly and now I'm proven right.

| » Graduation Day |
Last weekend was by any stretch of the imagination an exciting time, it started out with mum and dad meeting up with Lauren and myself before we headed off down to Reading. Now the trip to Reading was fine but driving around Reading is an absolute arse mostly due to a virtual complete lack of decent signage in the town although it must be said that the AA instructions I was using where also a bit rubbish. Eventually though we signed in at the Novotel Reading which is quite pleasant and then had a nice Chinese meal at the Chinese restaurant next to it (which strangely we could look into from our bedroom) before sloping back to the hotel drinking wine and eating crisps and then collapsing into bed.
The next morning saw us up early as we where headed out to the main event and the whole point why we where in Reading - my graduation from the College of Estate Management and my collecting my post-grad diploma in Surveying. We had a pretty hectic morning in the end with a lot of trials and tribulations before finally getting to the University (mum and I got there before it started, dad and lauren got there just afterwards). Still it was all worth it all and I had a nervous and exciting time, getting robed, collecting my diploma, chatting with the president of the RICS and having photos taken.
So there we are I'm glad I'm finished, it was hard and tiring and sometimes my course felt like it would never end. Have a picture to reward yourself for reading my dribble...

More pictures later...

| » Curse of the Vivid Imagination |
I have a vivid imagination - usually I take this as an advantage but for those of us who do you'll know that it does mean that you can ave particularly nasty nightmares, last nigt was one such example.
I dreamt that I had 3 thick stemmed plants growing out of my left leg around my ankle, they extended to a length of about 10 cm and ended in something like a big ugly dandelion flower. Understandably horrified I tore one out and was rewarded with about 20 cm of roots which I had felt dragging through the veins and arteries in my leg as it came out, I remember screaming all the time and then I woke up.
In the cold light of day it's obvious what's going on, I'm still trying to get my head around the metal implants in my leg (the number of plants relates closely to the pins and screws) which hold my leg together. I know that's true actually because in my conscious mind I've been struggling a bit - it's all odd, my ankle isn't the same ankle it used to be, they had to take some of the bone away and so the shape has changes and if I run my fingers over it I can feel the metal work.
Still makes me glad I hadn't ever had a boob job, I don't know how I'd have coped with the nightmares about that!

Mentioned in my earlier entry this is the Roman Legionary I've been working on regrettably the terrible Technika camera doesn't do the painting justice at all.
From the front...

From the rear...

And for fun a catgirl I painted a while ago - if you compare her to Jay the Cat you'll find she looks suprisingly similar (minus enormous catgirl norks...)
